Tom Rodwell

Thursday, 5 November 2015 @ 9:00 pm - 11:30 pm

We are pleased to welcome calypso-blues guitarist Tom Rodwell to the Roomfulla Blues stage this Thursday 5 November. Expect a tasty and witty evening of vintage rhythm & blues, soul and calypso music from the man described by the NME as “Sheffield’s answer to Lightnin’ Hopkins.”

Fresh from an acclaimed album and tour project with legendary NZ songwriter Don McGlashan, Rodwell has toured extensively in the UK, Switzerland, Holland and the US and has opened with his band Storehouse for artists including Leon Russell, Charles Bradley, C.W. Stoneking, Son of Dave, John Butler Trio, Trinity Roots, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, and Derek Trucks, who remarked “You don’t hear that anymore; beautiful tunes, beautiful groove!

His uniquely dance-orientated take on rhythm and blues music takes influences from calypso, slave-era spirituals and West African juju music – making his playing thoughtful, hard to categorise, yet instantly accessible, and bursting with salacious and surreal lyrics.

By turns wild, angry, hypnotic and sensual, it’s as uncompromising as it is funky and some of the best live music I’ve seen,” remarked Blues in London.

“It’s rare these days to find an original take on the blues, even in its land of origin, but the freshest blues I’ve heard in a long time comes from this local musician. His name is Tom Rodwell, and he’s just released this album. – Nick Bollinger – Radio New Zealand
