DESCRIPTION:For many of us\, our love of the blues was cemented by hearing songs from the Chess Records label. Muddy Waters\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Sonny Boy Wllliamson\, Willie Dixon\, Chuck Berry\, Buddy Guy… you get the picture. Chess Records is THE foundation of modern blues and rock. \n  \nBlues standards like Mojo Working\, How Many More Years\, Spoonful\, Hoochie Coochie Man\, Little Red Rooster\, and loads more\, all came from Chess Records artists. \n  \nThe massive bands of the ‘60s and ‘70s all started in their parents’ garages or at small bars playing music from these classic acts. The Stones\, Clapton\, Fleetwood Mac\, Hendrix\, Zeppelin\, Jethro Tull. They all began their careers playing these tunes. \n  \nYet we rarely hear many of those tunes played\, so we are putting that right with a specifically curated band to perform these foundational songs of the music we all love. \n  \nTyson Smith on guitar and vocals\, Paul Mouncey on bass\, and Rick Cranston on drums. DESCRIPTION:PIP PAYNE\, a regular player and founder of Capital Blues is back with another musical variation. Pip has had many artistic guises over the years which shows not only his versatility but also his depth of the music. This time he is joined by two outstanding musicians bring you some Louisiana blues and cajun. \n  \nRICHARD KLEIN is a high energy singing fiddler born in Orange\, New Jersey. In his early teens he discovered folk and roots music through listening to the likes of Woody Guthrie\, Pete Seeger and The New Lost City Ramblers. Travelling to Cape Breton Island in mid 1970s sparked the interest for Celtic music that later brought Richard to travel\, live\, work and busk extensively through Ireland and the British Isles. A chance meeting with a gang of Swedish fiddlers in Shetland in 1978 introduced another important influence in his fiddle style. But it was being properly introduced to Cajun music later that same year in France that had the most profound impact on his music. Resident in Wellington since 1997\, Richard is best known for his collaboration with the Le Blanc Brothers Cajun Band (Melbourne) and the geographically challenged Kiwi Americana band. T-Bone. In 2023 he relinquished his American citizenship. The accent\, however\, remains. \n  \nAL NORMAN has been on the Wellington scene for a while. Early blues club jams and bands\, on squeeze box and keys. For this gig it’s the squeeze box or snare. A multi-instrumentalist with a great feel for the groove. He’s been part of a number of well-established groups including Smokeshop\, Warratahs\, Laura Collins Band and still plays with the Rag Poets and\, less regularly\, The Hardcore Troubadours. With a career spanning more than four decades\, Bill has shaped the sound of New Zealand roots music—leading the iconic Windy City Strugglers\, co-founding the pioneering rock outfit Mammal\, and fronting the brassy\, groove-laden Pelicans in the 80s. \n  \nA gifted storyteller with a wry lyrical touch\, Bill’s songs have been covered by Midge Marsden\, Darren Watson\, Kokomo\, Rag Poets and Marg Layton. His live performances are intimate\, soulful affairs—equal parts reflection and revelation. \n  \nBill is joined by longtime friend and Mammal bandmate Steve Hemmens\, recently returned from the UK\, whose supple bass lines bring warmth and swing. DESCRIPTION:It’s 15 months since Culture Embassy last played for us\, so we are really looking forward to welcoming them to our new venue. \n  \nThe band always gets the audience dancing from their infectious range of beats. From reggae\, roots\, Cuban\, Afro-beat\, and more. Dancing is guaranteed along with great music. \n  \nThe band is led by singer\, Ras Judah from Botswana\, with two drummers\, from Ghana\, and Tanzania. Already you can start to get a feel of the rhythms. \n  \nOther musicians have Kiwi\, Greek\, Philippines\, and English backgrounds. Add in some jazz influences and you can see why they are called Culture Embassy. \n  \nThis isn’t just a band but a carnival of diversity. \n  \nIf you haven’t seen Culture Embassy before\, check them out.
