SUMMARY:The Swing Session
DESCRIPTION:For those who were lucky enough to get to one of the late-night jams in Jack Hackett’s Basement in the Jazz Festival\, you know what fantastic times and music there were. For many though\, they are a bit late at night.\nBut fear not: You can get a reprise at The Swing Session at the much friendlier time of 6.30. \nThe jam sessions of the festival are some of the highlights of the whole event. Many of the same musicians will be playing\, so come and have a great groove and still be able to go to work on Friday.

SUMMARY:The Uptakes
DESCRIPTION:Sgt. Pepper and his Lonely-Hearts Club Band brought happiness through its music\, even causing troops in World Wars I and II to stop fighting. In August 1958\, Sgt. Pepper died of a heart attack in the middle of a performance. He left the band’s magical musical instruments to the town; so long as they remain in Wellington\, its people will live happily ever after. \n  \nSgt. Pepper left his musical legacy to his handsome and good-hearted grandson\, Louis Thompson-Munn. Louis formed a new Lonely Hearts Club Band called The Uptakes with his three best friends: brothers Nick\, Steve\, and Chris. Louis and the three brothers picked up Sgt. Pepper’s magical musical instruments and played the sweetest soul and funk music to ever grace the ears of humans\, and with it they ensured happiness and good vibes remained in Wellington forever. \n  \nLouis Thompson-Munn – keys & vocals \nChris Armour – guitar \nSteve Moodie – big guitar \nNick George – drums

SUMMARY:Pip Payne’s Milestone
DESCRIPTION:Pip is one of the founders of Capital Blues\, 27 years ago\, helping to make Capital Blues the longest-running blues club in the southern hemisphere. \n  \nNow Pip is reaching a milestone of his own. \n  \nJoin us to celebrate Pip Payne turning 70 – because speed limits are just a suggestion. \n  \nIf you have seen Pip play recently\, you’ll know his fabulous bluesy interpretations of some classic\, but not blues songs. His versions of Sailing Shoes\, and Brown Sugar\, are worth the evening alone. He also has some great British Blues Boom style numbers of his own. \n  \nPip will be joined initially by Roger Watkins on drums\, and Elliot Fuimaono on bass\, and there will be a limited number of guest spots. \n  \nPip’s looking forward to playing blues with some of the people he’s jammed with over the years. If you would like to jam with Pip\, get in touch beforehand so he can organise the spots. We’ve got a house backline\, and DI for acoustic instruments. \n  \nThere won’t be any candles\, because that many would be more like a bonfire.

SUMMARY:BB and The Bullets
DESCRIPTION:After returning from Australia Brian Baker has wasted no time in making an impact on the NZ blues scene. His solo show with much heralded and reviewed singles and film clips\, has seen him perform at gigs and festivals across the country. \n  \nNow he’s joined by two local Whanganui musicians\, bass player Johnny Keating (foundation member of the Whanganui Musicians Club)\, and drummer Brad MacMillan\, both seasoned performers\, to become a blues three-piece performing classics and originals. \n  \nThe act is called BB and The Bullets and has a focus on the blues\, doing songs by Albert King\, BB King\, Muddy Waters\, plus some Stevie Ray Vaughan\, and other blues classics. \n  \nThey also feature some of Brian’s excellent releases and have recorded a few of their own. These tracks make up their debut EP which will soon be released on vinyl\, CD\, and digital through Nixon Street Recorders\, Whanganui’s own international record label. \n  \nThe guitar work that made Brian’s solo show stand out is heavily on display here\, now backed by a tight\, live rhythm section. Their shows have been very well received wherever they have performed\, getting standing ovations at the recent Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival where they played six standout shows over three days! They are drawing crowds wherever they appear\, delighting audiences with rock solid\, emotive performances of classic blues songs underlined by one undoubtedly of the finest guitarists New Zealand has produced. \n  \nThis is a new band for us so come and support some fresh talent.

SUMMARY:Oscar Lavën’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Sax
DESCRIPTION:Oscar needs no introduction for regulars to the Wellington music scene\, nor for Capital Blues as this band plays each month for us. \n  \nOscar can be heard frequently playing around town\, in different styles\, all superbly performed.  This time\, Oscar is bringing back his raunchy rock ‘n’ roll sax with a few nods to the likes of Sam Butera\, King Curtis\, and Earl Bostic. \n  \nJoining them are the majestic Aleister Campbell (guitar)\, bodacious Patrick Bleakley (double bass)\, iron-clad Darren Mathiassen (drums)\, and diamond-plated Damian Forlong (trombone). \n  \nThis is always a popular gig. Loads of people dancing ‘n’ grooving. \n  \nCome and see why.

SUMMARY:NZSM Big Band 1 and Big Band 2 plus Guitar Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:We showcased the two NZSM Big Bands in July and what incredible performances they gave us. The standard of music from the July gigs was exceptional for such young players. \nAt Capital Blues\, we have a long and deep association with the NZSM Big Bands going back many years. There is the cherished link with Rodger Fox\, but it’s more than that. 80% of the musicians that play in Capital Blues were in the Big Bands (albeit under various institution’s names) at some stage. Our President and soundman\, Damian Forlong\, and Oscar Lavën are only two examples. \n  \nMany of these players will be the future of live music in Wellington. Come along and support them.

SUMMARY:The Nick Granville Blues Band
DESCRIPTION:The Nick Granville Blues Band features some of the busiest and finest musicians playing in New Zealand today. They are coming together again for an extravaganza of Chicago blues. \n  \nNeil Billington\, described as ‘the Hendrix of the harmonica’\, is probably the best blues harmonica player in the country. His performances are always electrifying\, showing what can be accomplished on a harmonica. \n  \nNick Granville has played guitar around the world including London’s O2 Arena\, and The Monterey Jazz Festival. A former guitar tutor at the New Zealand School of Music\, he has also recorded albums with some leading jazz bands and musicians too. Among the artists Nick has played with are Dave Matthews\, Dave Weckl\, Chris de Burgh\, the Rodger Fox Big Band\, and many more. \n  \nCompleting the band for us tonight are two outstanding musicians: Darren Mathiassen (drums) (Shapeshifter\, Kora\, and many more\, and Elliot Fuimaono (bass) (Aotearoa Allstars\, Red Dog Saloon Band\, and many others). \n  \nExpect some explosive playing.  This is a gig not to be missed.
