SUMMARY:Ain't Superstitious
DESCRIPTION:We aim to bring you new acts whenever we can so… \nFor the first time ever for Capital Blues Inc. \nAin’t Superstitious \nThe band\, as yet unnamed\, started out about 10 years ago with Erena\, John & Andre. We played as a trio for a few gigs and then JG came along for a jam & joined on drums. We hunted out our guitarist mate BJ\, who as luck would have it\, loves to play the blues! \nThe band members these days: Erena Whare – vocals\,  BJ Morony – guitar\, John Pringle – bass\, Simon Hickman – Harmonica\, vocals & Josh Wyatt – Drums. \nWe love to expose people to lesser-known material & work them out in our own style. Never happier than working up old blues\, soul & gospel numbers! \nWe have a passion for creating quality music and love the positive interaction with the audience that it provides. We are loving what we do and stoked to be playing at Capital Blues! \nFrom Chicago grit to soul powered gospel\, Ain’t Superstitious are guaranteed get you into the blues groove! \nFun Fact: The boys wanted the band to be called the Erena Whare Band\, but Erena said she would kill us if we did that\, so we all put names in a hat & Ain’t Superstitious came out. (Plus\, it’s a cool Howlin’ Wolf song!) \n

SUMMARY:BB and the Bullets

In just 18 months\, they’ve had nationwide tours\, festival gigs\, released three singles\, and launched an album worldwide\, High Tide\, last year\, which got to #5 on the IMNZ chart. \nThe first album captured the energy of their live shows of blues songs\, old and newer\, plus some originals. You won’t be disappointed. You’ll hear songs by Albert King\, BB King\, Muddy Waters\, plus Stevie Ray Vaughan\, early Led Zeppelin\, and other blues classics. \n“An authentic\, powerful and generous album\, which will undoubtedly place BB & The Bullets among the blues rock revelations of the year.” – Zicazic Magazine\, France. \nTickets $20 or $10 for Capital Blues Inc members.

SUMMARY:Pip Payne with Richard Klein and Al Norman
DESCRIPTION:PIP PAYNE\, a regular player and founder of Capital Blues is back with another musical variation. Pip has had many artistic guises over the years which shows not only his versatility but also his depth of the music. This time he is joined by two outstanding musicians bring you some Louisiana blues and cajun. \n  \nRICHARD KLEIN is a high energy singing fiddler born in Orange\, New Jersey. In his early teens he discovered folk and roots music through listening to the likes of Woody Guthrie\, Pete Seeger and The New Lost City Ramblers. Travelling to Cape Breton Island in mid 1970s sparked the interest for Celtic music that later brought Richard to travel\, live\, work and busk extensively through Ireland and the British Isles. A chance meeting with a gang of Swedish fiddlers in Shetland in 1978 introduced another important influence in his fiddle style. But it was being properly introduced to Cajun music later that same year in France that had the most profound impact on his music. Resident in Wellington since 1997\, Richard is best known for his collaboration with the Le Blanc Brothers Cajun Band (Melbourne) and the geographically challenged Kiwi Americana band. T-Bone. In 2023 he relinquished his American citizenship. The accent\, however\, remains. \n  \nAL NORMAN has been on the Wellington scene for a while. Early blues club jams and bands\, on squeeze box and keys. For this gig it’s the squeeze box or snare. A multi-instrumentalist with a great feel for the groove. He’s been part of a number of well-established groups including Smokeshop\, Warratahs\, Laura Collins Band and still plays with the Rag Poets and\, less regularly\, The Hardcore Troubadours. He has also played a number of gigs offshore and toured NZ extensively. \n  \nCome and join us for another fine session featuring some virtuoso playing with a twist on the blues. \n  \nTickets are $20 or $10 for members\, with bar discounts for paid-up club membership.

SUMMARY:BB & THE BULLETS
DESCRIPTION:“An authentic\, powerful and generous album\, which will undoubtedly place BB & The Bullets among the blues rock revelations of the year.” – Zicazic Magazine\, France \nIt’s been a great couple of weeks for dynamic Whanganui blues band BB & THE BULLETS!   \nCurrently playing their North Island tour\, celebrating the international release of their debut album HIGH TIDE from September\, the album has achieved impressive traction across Aotearoa’s music soundscape by entering the Official Top 20 Aotearoa Albums at #12 and #5 on the Independent Music NZ Charts! \nLanding on both the IMNZ Charts and the Official Aotearoa Music Charts is a cracking result\, not just as independent artists\, but also for a blues-rock outfit\, demonstrating that it’s a genre that can successfully cross both indie and conventional charts\, appealing to both grassroots and mainstream audiences – an outcome that the band is thrilled about. \n“It’s a great result! We are so proud to be #5 on the IMNZ Chart. Independent artists are the grassroots and lifeblood of Kiwi music. And there’s only been a few local indie blues-rock albums on the Official Aotearoa Music Charts over the last decade – our mate Grant Haua in 2022\, and Troy Kingi in 2016\, so we’re stoked to be here and rep the Blues in 2025!” \nSTREAM HIGH TIDE HERE  | DOWNLOAD MEDIA + RADIO ASSETS HERE \nThe tight\, three piece blues rock outfit of band members Brad McMillan (drums)\, Stu Duncan (bass)\, and Brian Baker (guitar / vocals)  have garnered a reputation for their powerful and moving live performances\, drawing comparisons to Stevie Ray Vaughan\, Johnny Winter\, Peter Green and Jeff Beck\, while firmly putting their own stamp on the timeless medium that is the blues. \nBB & The Bullets have released three well received singles to date off the album: debut single ‘Something In The Water’; album title track ‘High Tide’; and their blues-soaked rendition of the Beatles classic ‘I Want You (She’s So Heavy)’ which is a huge fan favourite at their live shows. To date\, all three singles have enjoyed some excellent blues radio attention\, including airplay on Radio New Zealand and around the country\, as well as in Germany\, USA\, and Canada\, with ‘High Tide’ charting at #4 on Roots Music Charts in Australia\, achieving #1 on the Roots Music Report Blues Album Chart\, #1 on the Blues Rock Album Chart and three songs on the Blues Singles chart. \nHome country of their label Dixiefrog Records has plenty of great things to say about BB & The Bullets\, with Paris Move Magazine giving the album a very favourable review\, ranking it as a ‘red heart’ favourite\, as has French outlet Zicazic Magazine\, and the title track single ‘High Tide’ has made the weekly playlist of Rolling Stone Magazine\, France. \n“This album proves to be a declaration of love to the roots of the blues\, driven by striking live energy and unabashed virtuosity.” – Zicazic Magazine\, France \nNow the trio are continuing to take their killer live show across the motu through October and November. With a well-deserved reputation for their compelling live shows\, BB & The Bullets audiences are always wowed by the power and intensity of their performances. \nWith this chart action\, it is evident that the blues scene is alive and vibrant on Antipodean shores\, grab your mates and don’t miss your chance to check out a blues-rock experience like no other with BB & The Bullets! \n  \nTickets here.

SUMMARY:Jamie and the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Northern Soulsters Jamie and the Numbers have wowed audiences around New Zealand. They have even been discovered by the BBC and played on their Funk and Soul Show! \n  \nJamie\, the singer\, is an outstanding performer\, and what a voice!  She’s backed by a fabulous band. \n  \nThey released a tremendous album in 2022. Can you imagine a soul version of The Seeker by The Who? It’s incredible. The band will be worth seeing for that tune alone. \n  \nAnd when they do “The Letter” (the Joe Cocker hit)\, it’s simply astonishing. \n  \nIt’s hard to describe how good this band is. You will have to come and find out. \n  \nTickets are $20 or $10 for members.

SUMMARY:Bill Lake
DESCRIPTION:“Gentle\, sometimes witty and just as often moving reflections at every turn” – Graham Reid \n  \nGuitarist\, singer and songwriter Bill Lake is a cornerstone of Aotearoa’s musical landscape. With a career spanning more than four decades\, Bill has shaped the sound of New Zealand roots music—leading the iconic Windy City Strugglers\, co-founding the pioneering rock outfit Mammal\, and fronting the brassy\, groove-laden Pelicans in the 80s. \n  \nA gifted storyteller with a wry lyrical touch\, Bill’s songs have been covered by Midge Marsden\, Darren Watson\, Kokomo\, Rag Poets and Marg Layton. His live performances are intimate\, soulful affairs—equal parts reflection and revelation. \n  \nBill is joined by longtime friend and Mammal bandmate Steve Hemmens\, recently returned from the UK\, whose supple bass lines bring warmth and swing. Rounding out the trio is multi-instrumentalist Alan Norman (The Warratahs\, Rag Poets)\, adding colour and texture on accordion\, percussion\, guitar\, and piano. \n  \nTogether\, they offer a rich\, rootsy blend of blues\, folk\, and country music with heart\, history\, and a touch of Wellington grit. \n  \nTicket link is: https://events.humanitix.com/capital-blues-presents-bill-lakes-slow-bake

DESCRIPTION:The Dancing & Drinking Society (or DADS for short)\, is New Zealand’s premier exponent of authentic 1920s Blues & Jass. \nTheir repertoire includes many of the Rags\, Rambles\, Shuffles\, Drags\, and Blues that our great-grandparents would have shimmied to in the juke joints\, speakeasies\, woolsheds and Memorial Halls of 1920s New Zealand. \nAlthough this combo has a mere 4 members\, it has the impact of a full Syncopating-Orchestra\, with multiple instruments being played simultaneously by multiple band members. \nBlair “Sweet-Lips” Latham – Clarinet\, Bass Clarinet\, Tenor Saxophone \nMat “Mon Colonel” Enright – Trumpet\, Resonator Guitar\, Vocals \nAdrian “AJ” Jensen – Gypsy Guitar\, Bass Drum \nDaniel “Pappy” Yeabsley -Tuba\, Hi-Hat. \n  \nSupporting the DADS\, from 8.30\, will be William Jackman. \nHailing from Wellington and playing his own blend of rock n roll\, country\, and blues mixed with the songwriters of yesteryear\, William Jackman brings his unique collection of self-penned songs. With two solo albums in the works and a breadth of backlogged material with both his band ‘The Shadow Blasters’ and his new unit ‘The New Thing’ William is ready to get back onto the Wellington scene\, dust off the old six-string\, and sing his heart out. \nWilliam will be on at 8.30\, The DADS about 9.15.
