SUMMARY:Bullfrog Rata and the Elegant Wastrels!
DESCRIPTION:Bullfrog Rata emerges from his muddy pond to present a night of foot stomping blues tunes with a tinge of jazz-infused trumpet and keyboards.\nHe will also be slipping in 3 or 4 of his own self-penned tunes in each set.\nAs yet his songs remain unreleased with an album almost ready to go and another CD’s worth already written\, so he is looking forward to giving these songs an airing in a live situation.\nHe is joined by the Elegant Wastrels; Patrick Bleakley on Double Bass\, John Rae on Drums\, Duncan Haynes on Piano and Geoff Culverwell on Trumpet & Flute.\nBullfrog will be on his game with these heavyweight hombres behind him as he presents his new songs\, which meander through styles and moods\, delivered with a pastiche of commentary and humour.

SUMMARY:Two Bluesy Blondes
DESCRIPTION:Erna Ferry and Julie Lamb in a mash up of blonde hair and bluesy lungs… From trad to not so much… The song list is varied\, and the band is grand!  The line up is Erna Ferry\, vocals and harmonica; Julie Lamb\, vocals and bad jokes; Andrew Richardson\, drums; Callum Hazlitt-Black\, bass; Pieter Bos\, keys; Deane Hunter\, guitar and Andrew Clouston\, sax.\n\nForged from a love of hair and blues\, Two Bluesy Blondes brings you the ultimate Jazz Blues singer Erna Ferry and her energetic\, rocky sidekick Julie Lamb. “Two acclaimed vocalists brought together for high-energy blues” says Stephen Fisher. “The idea of bringing together both Palmerston North’s supreme jazz vocalist Erna Ferry and Wellington’s much-acclaimed singer-songwriter Julie Lamb for a night of passionate blues was indeed inspired\, allowing these two vocalists to fully relax into their programme of covers of blues classics\, creating an unforgettable night.”\n\nThese guys are funny\, frightfully good\, and boast a stellar band of wonderful groovers

SUMMARY:Bullfrog Rata and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Legendary NZ blues man\, Bullfrog Rata\, lays it down at Jack Hackett’s on Friday 13 November 2020. \nHis brand of earthy\, primal blues has been a work in progress\, from standing on street corners\, busking in towns like Levin and Wairoa to jaunts on jet planes to play in some of London’s most packed bars. \nThough known as a bluesman his tastes are many and varied and like all good amphibians he is at home on water or land. This could mean a driving Texas shuffle\, or a sly West Coast swing\, maybe a riveting acoustic ballad or a stinging slide solo perhaps? \n“I do all sorts of things depending on what feels right\, with me\, and the vibe in the crowd at the time!” say’s the man himself ‘but blues is definitely the glue that holds the gumbo together!”

Their songs comment on life experiences with a distinctive Wellington flavour. \nWellington Heads have evolved their own sound through the influences of Kansas style blue jazz\, the swinging rhythm n blues of Louis Jordan and Ray Charles\, Chicago blues and infused with Pacific/Hawaiian rhythms and Latino feels. \nSharp and energetic\, Wellington Heads entice people to the dance floor\, regularly delighting audiences at Wellington venues\, and playing festivals\, corporate and private functions. They are frequently invited to perform outside of Wellington\, and over recent years have played in Tauranga\, Manawatu\, Nelson and at Wellington Jazz and Blues Festivals. \nWellington Heads have recorded five albums\, their last ‘Southern Night Sky’ released in 2016. This critically acclaimed album continues their unique sound with a mix of rhythm n’ blues\, swing\, soul and latino grooves. In combining this with their previous albums Wellington Heads have built an extensive repertoire of eclectic original songs. \nWellington Heads’ regular six piece line up is: Neil Worboys– vocals\, guitar\, harmonica; Bill Wood– guitars; Geoff Keith– bass; Greg Crayford– drums; James Tait-Jamieson– saxophone and Nick van Dijk– trombone\, trumpet.

SUMMARY:Pip Payne followed by Matt Joe Gow
DESCRIPTION:At 8.30pm\, Pip Payne is one man\, one slide guitar and a stomp box holding down big blues tunes with re energised interpretations! WOW – last time Pip played for the club the dance floor was packed – Brilliant. \nThen at 9.45pm – a SPECIAL TREAT (You’ve all been so good lately!): Matt Joe Gow. This guys “one sheet” reads like a dream – look who he’s supported\, where he’s played and how well his music does… \nWOOT! We’re lucky to have him here. So bring some $ to buy an album or 2.\nMATT JOE GOW was born in New Zealand in what is known colloquially as the “deep south”\, it is fitting that Matt found his feet as songwriter in a genre of music that was born in the Deep South of the USA – Americana. Whilst these far flung regions have little in common in terms of climate\, they both share a rich musical history\, and Matt absorbed both growing up. \nMatt’s debut ‘The Messenger’ was produced by multi-ARIA award-winner Nash Chambers and featured Jim Moginie of Midnight Oil and iconic Australian country artist Bill Chambers. Released on Liberation Records the album introduced Matt and in many ways alt country to many people for the first time in Australia. \nThe album launched Matt Joe Gow on to the scene and over the years Matt’s tour schedule would move from solely boutique Americana gatherings to also include more mainstream festivals such as Day On The Green and the recent Riverboats Music Festival. With tour supports of Chris Isaak\, Justin Townes Earle\, The Jayhawks\, Grant Lee Phillips\, Marlon Williams and Kasey Chambers under the belt Matt Joe Gow built a simmering credibility to go along side the authentic Alt Country tones. \nIt was however Matt’s latest self produced album\, ‘Break Rattle And Roll’ which ranges from Stones-esque blues rock and roll to hushed country heartbreak that truly resonated with fans and critics alike and went on to win the prestigious Music Victoria Award for Best Country album. More recently Matt has also enjoyed a number 1 single on the Amrap Charts with his single “Too Far To Go”.

SUMMARY:Brannigan Kaa then the Neil Billington Band
DESCRIPTION:At 6:30pm\, we start with Brannigan Kaa. \nBrannigan is probably the most popular recording artist on the Maori Radio Network – his 90’s classic Maumahara Noa Ahau (originally released on Tangiora 2) is always on the most-requested lists. His vocal performances are standout. Brannigan can sing blues\, funk\, reggae\, pop\, R’n’B\, big band sounds and his original compositions are innovative and infectious. \nThen at 8:30pm\, it’s the Neil Billington Band! \nNeil is equally at home whether playing in the ‘Chicago-style’ of Little Walter on the blues harp or reflecting the more sophisticated jazz sensibilities of Belgian jazz great\, Jean ‘Toots’ Thielemans\, on chromatic harmonica. Neil covers a range of genres\, from old-time pre-war blues through to the great Chicago blues harp masters. \nThe Neil Billington band feature the horn section of Damian Forlong and Andre Paris\, the deep grooves of Andrew Richardson and Ross McDermott and the sweaty guitar of Deane Hunter.  These elements combined with ill-fitting suits and just the right amount of responsibly imbibed liquor inside the audience\, make for the most fun you can have with your pants on!
