SUMMARY:Carol Bean\, Terry Casey\, Dave Murphy
DESCRIPTION:These long-standing devotees of blues music\, Carol\, Terry and Dave\, will swap and turn-about their original tunes and their musical styles\, either backing each other up or egging each other on. Dave’s take on finger-picking style blues\, Terry’s blistering harp\, and Carol’s guitar hooks and bluesy voice promise a night of variety and fun backed by; Richard Te One drums\, Miklin Halstead bass\, Deane Hunter guitar. \nTerry Casey is an integral member of the Wellington blues scene. He fronts his own band and is the go-to blues harp player for many musicians including Darren Watson\, Dougal Spier\, and Dave Murphy. Terry’s original songs are rhythmic\, hard hitting and often funny. He has almost enough songs for an album – watch this space. \nDave Murphy isn’t just a bluesman\, a Piedmont picker\, and vocalist\, he also leans towards country ballads and has perfected the picking style of Chet Atkins. He is in a duo with Janet Muggeridge and plays in the Red Dog Saloon Bandwith Dougal Spier. Like Dave and Terry\, Dave and Carol have performed together regularly. They were featured guests at the NZ Blues Festival in Rotorua where Dave opened for acclaimed American slide blues player Doug McLeod. \nThe blues is a music made by people who have struggled\, have hard and true stories to tell and do so in a voice that is compelling. Dave Murphy\, 40 years a journeyman on New Zealand’s blues highway\, is one of those characters.Graham Reid \nCarol Bean has performed for Capital Blues at Cuba Dupa\, ‘Lady Sings the Blues’ and Julie Lamb’s ‘Wild Women of Wellington Sing the Blues’. Carol grew up watching blues musicians in LA; Mississippi John Hurt\, Lightnin Hopkins\, Mance Lipscomb\, Taj Mahal\, Ry Cooder. Drawn to ‘swampy’ songwriters like Lucinda Williams and Tony Joe White\, Carol has written and recorded three albums\, and guested at festivals in NZ and Australia. \nCarol Bean delivers some serious messages and is at her best when she errs to the gritty\, personal blues. When the mood drops\, she reveals another\, more intimate\, side. When she gets the band kicking you know she must shake walls in pubs and clubs. Graham Reid \nAvailable on the night: Carol Bean’sNext Bus Out(2014) $15; Crossing the Dirty River(2009) $10. Dave Murphy’s Yes That’s Me: Dave Murphy Plays the Blues CD/DVD(2008) $30

SUMMARY:Neil Billington Band
DESCRIPTION:One of New Zealand’s foremost harmonica players\, Neil Billington\, will be returning to the Blues Club backed by the consummate skills of Deane Hunter on guitar\, Ross McDermott on bass and Richard Te One on drums. \nNeil covers a range of genres\, from old-time pre-war blues through to the great Chicago blues harp masters\, to the ballads of the American song-book and jazz standards of Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. He is equally at home whether playing in the ‘Chicago-style’ of Little Walter on the blues harp or reflecting the more sophisticated jazz sensibilities of Belgian jazz great\, Jean ‘Toots’ Thielemans\, on chromatic harmonica. \nIn 2016 Neil performed with Mike Garner at the ‘Live Magic’ blues festival in Tokyo\, where he was invited to play with the lead act\, slide-guitar legend Sonny Landreth\, described by Eric Clapton as ‘one of the most advanced guitar players in the world’\, and Neil will be featuring on Landreth’s official video\, ‘Live in Tokyo’. \nNeil made his fourth visit to Japan in 2017\, where he played with some of their finest blues and jazz musicians\, such as former Chicago-based guitarist Shun Kikuta\, boogie pianist Rei “Ms Lee” Kanehira\, and acoustic guitar virtuoso Yuji Hamaguchi. Neil was invited by the Hohner company\, the world’s leading harmonica manufacturer\, to be a guest star performer at the company’s Tokyo festival earler in 2018\, where he demonstrated his skills on both the blues harp and the chromatic harmonica – a rare accolade \nDeane Hunter is one of the most individual and inventive guitar players on the local and national scene\, while Ross McDermott is a master of the electric bass\, and Richard Te One on drums is a true “shuffle king”\, holding together a rhythm section of unsurpassed feel and drive. Fasten your seat-belts for a night of high octane blues.

SUMMARY:The Del Thomas Band
DESCRIPTION:Del Thomas and his band are next up at the Crossroads this Thursday 1 August. \nBand lineup: Dougal Speir – guitar; Elliot Fuimoano – bass; Mo Phillips – drums.; Del Thomas – guitar and vocals.  The band will be joined by Al Norman on keys and A Nother as a special guest! \n“The Mac influence is audible in slow-burning numbers like Every Hour\, with gritty vocals and wailing slide guitar. But with these self-penned songs\, this stalwart of the Wellington blues scene also dips a toe into less blue waters. The blues are obviously deep in his bones\, but as the website says\, he has “one foot in the blues and the other in country-folk-rock” – a nice combo!” – Bing Turkby\, NZ Musician. \n

SUMMARY:Bullfrog Rata and All-Star Band
DESCRIPTION:Legendary NZ blues man\, Bullfrog Rata\, lays it down! \nHis brand of earthy\, primal blues has been a work in progress\, from standing on street corners\, busking in towns like Levin and Wairoa to jaunts on jet planes to play in some of London’s most packed bars. \nThough known as a bluesman his tastes are many and varied and like all good amphibians he is at home on water or land. This could mean a driving Texas shuffle\, or a sly West Coast swing\, maybe a riveting acoustic ballad or a stinging slide solo perhaps? \n“I do all sorts of things depending on what feels right\, with me\, and the vibe in the crowd at the time!” say’s the man himself ‘but blues is definitely the glue that holds the gumbo together!”
