DESCRIPTION:The Dancing & Drinking Society (or DADS for short)\, is New Zealand’s premier exponent of authentic 1920s Blues & Jass. \nTheir repertoire includes many of the Rags\, Rambles\, Shuffles\, Drags\, and Blues that our great-grandparents would have shimmied to in the juke joints\, speakeasies\, woolsheds and Memorial Halls of 1920s New Zealand. \nAlthough this combo has a mere 4 members\, it has the impact of a full Syncopating-Orchestra\, with multiple instruments being played simultaneously by multiple band members. \nBlair “Sweet-Lips” Latham – Clarinet\, Bass Clarinet\, Tenor Saxophone \nMat “Mon Colonel” Enright – Trumpet\, Resonator Guitar\, Vocals \nAdrian “AJ” Jensen – Gypsy Guitar\, Bass Drum \nDaniel “Pappy” Yeabsley -Tuba\, Hi-Hat. \n  \nSupporting the DADS\, from 8.30\, will be William Jackman. \nHailing from Wellington and playing his own blend of rock n roll\, country\, and blues mixed with the songwriters of yesteryear\, William Jackman brings his unique collection of self-penned songs. With two solo albums in the works and a breadth of backlogged material with both his band ‘The Shadow Blasters’ and his new unit ‘The New Thing’ William is ready to get back onto the Wellington scene\, dust off the old six-string\, and sing his heart out. \nWilliam will be on at 8.30\, The DADS about 9.15.

She is accompanied by Cam Steel on drums and percussion\, beautifully adding texture and colour to tunes\, both original and reimagined. \nJess Deacon is a cross-genre vocalist and songwriter who embodies influences from jazz\, folk\, soul\, classic rock and choral music. She is an engaging performer\, has an ear for music that speaks to the soul\, and writes songs that connect us as humans and challenge the expectations of the modern musician – following the ebb and flow of life as we know it. \n  \nShe has fronted a number of bands\, been commissioned as a composer\, recorded on several projects\, performed at a variety of festivals and events across Aotearoa\, and has written a variety of original music. \n  \nCam Steel is an amazing drummer and all-round beat master whose ability to produce a soundscape driven by rhythm is next level. \n  \nTogether\, Jess and Cam will give us a lunchtime of easy\, groovy blues\, a fine way to while away a Sunday afternoon. \n  \nTickets are $20 or $10 for Capital Blues Inc members. \n10% discount at the bar for food and drinks for members.

With over 20 years of groove under their belts and a sound shaped by Kansas blue jazz\, New Orleans funk\, and Pacific rhythms\, this six-piece is pure leg jiggle magic 🙂 \nCooler than a southerly. Hotter than a horn solo. \n  \nPlaying predominately original music\, Wellington Heads have evolved their own sound through the influences of Kansas style blue jazz\, the swinging rhythm n blues of Louis Jordan and Ray Charles\, Chicago blues and infused with Pacific/Hawaiian rhythms\, New Orleans grooves and Latino feels. They regularly delight audiences at a number of Wellington venues and are frequently invited to perform outside of Wellington. Over the years they have played Auckland\, Tauranga\, Manawatu\, Nelson and Wellington Jazz and Blues Festivals. \n  \nWellington Heads have recorded six albums\, their latest\, ‘World Keep On Turning’ was released in December 2023. DESCRIPTION:We showcased the two NZSM Big Bands in July and what incredible performances they gave us. The standard of music from the July gigs was exceptional for such young players. \nAt Capital Blues\, we have a long and deep association with the NZSM Big Bands going back many years. There is the cherished link with Rodger Fox\, but it’s more than that. 80% of the musicians that play in Capital Blues were in the Big Bands (albeit under various institution’s names) at some stage. Our President and soundman\, Damian Forlong\, and Oscar Lavën are only two examples. \n  \nMany of these players will be the future of live music in Wellington. Come along and support them.

DESCRIPTION:28 years ago\, two blues players\, quickly joined by a third player\, wanted a regular gig where they could play the music they loved. They found a venue and so Capital Blues began. Two of those bluesmen are playing for us this week. \n  \nDougal Speir on guitar\, and Dave Murphy on vocals and guitar\, were two of the three players\, and have been playing blues together for over thirty years. Their set list is like a “who’s-who” of classic blues tunes\, but\, and a big but\, they put their own style and interpretation on them. Sometimes\, you think they are completely new tunes\, so good is their re-imagining of old songs\, but never losing that blues feel. \n  \nThis is the last time they will be playing for Capital Blues at Jack Hackett’s\, as we transition to our new venue. Come and join in the party as they show us what great blues performances can be. \nWe tell you all the time about the amazing Dougal Speir and Dave Murphy\, but the rhythm section has way more fame than hiding at the back of stage warrants! \nElliot Fuimaono – Bass:\nTaste of Bounty the Fuimaono family band\, mentored and recorded by Dalvanius. \nSouth Side of Bombay – recorded the iconic “What’s the Time Mr Wolf” used in Once Were Warriors. These guys won at least 3 awards in the 1990’s. \nHe has played with Darren Watson\, and plays with Aotearoa All Stars\, Nick Granville\, Neil Billington – and of course\, Red Dog Saloon Band. \nElliot is well-recognised as the go-to bass dude with the grooves; it’s almost like a bass and rig complete him! (Ok – family too.) \nRoger Watkins – Drums:\nAuthor\, historian\, night club owner\, TV Star\, music shop owner\, and mentor. Often listed as an inspiration by young dudes\, and with a wealth of experience from playing in house bands on TV shows in the ‘60s/’70s\, forming Bouldah in the ‘70s\, playing with the Kemptones and writing 2 extremely well-regarded books on Aotearoa music history (about the late ‘50s to ‘70s.) These books served as inspiration for the amazing @audioculturenz platform. He is such a great dude to catch up with and listen to\, and his knowledge about drums and drumming is just spectacular. \nYou can see these legends at the club on Friday this week. \nIf you like the blues or want to find out more\, come and listen to Dougal and Dave joined by their long-time rhythm section of Roger Watkins (drums)\, and Elliot Fuimaono (bass).

DESCRIPTION:Do you ever wonder why there is so much good live music in Wellington? Well\, a large part of that is because of the NZ School of Music\, NZSM. \n  \nEvery year there is another generation of graduates\, many of whom stay in Wellington. \n  \nThey have studied\, practised\, and performed for years\, honing their skills and craft to become superb musicians. Many of the students develop their art playing in the NZSM Big Band. They get to experience playing in a big ensemble\, and also to perform in public. These public performances are a key part of their study and learning. \n  \nThe current cohort will be playing at Jack Hackett’s on Wed\, 28th May. This is your chance to see and hear the next generation of fabulous young talent. \n  \nOpening the evening will be the NZSM Jazz Guitar Ensemble. \n  \nAgain\, we have heard many tremendous young guitar players in Wellington who have graduated from NZSM. Guitarists like Alex Boulton\, Callum Allardice\, Lockie Bennett\, and many more. \n  \nCome and support these young players on their path. DESCRIPTION:If you haven’t seen a double drums gig yet\, you really do owe it to yourself to get to one. The energy from the two drummers is unbelievable. It was one of the highlights of the Jazz Festival last year. I have seen seven of these\, each with a different pair of drummers. Each has a different energy and feel\, but they have all been outstanding. \n  \nThe band this week is Nick Granville – Guitar & Bandleader\, Duncan Haynes – Keys\, Darren Mathiassen – Drums plus special guest\, Rick Cranson for the other drummer. \n  \nThis band plays everything from funk to blues to jazz and everything in between\, and has been described as a mash-up of Thelonius Monk meets James Brown.
