DESCRIPTION:The Capital Blues Club has a new home at Jack Hackett’s.  Formally ‘Bill Direen’s’ bar in the nineties\, the stage at Jack Hackett’s hosted the very early gigs for the Blue’s Club back in 1996. After a long stint at The Bristol\, the Club is fortuitously returning to its roots at the Crossroads of Dixon and Taranaki Streets. \nBlues artist Pip Payne was the driving force behind the Blues Club in the early years. He is returning to the very same stage 22 years later for the Opening Night Party with his band ‘The Gospel Project’ featuring Wayne Mason on keys. \nThe idea to host the club really struck a chord with Jack Hackett’s manager – Matt McLaughlin.  “I’m a huge fan and supporter of local live music. I know beer and blues on a Thursday is going to be  really appealing\, especially as we head into summer. I want Jack Hackett’s to be recognised as the go-to destination for Blues in the Capital. So we are committed to continuing this great tradition.” \nClub member\,  treasurer of 8 years and musician Julie Lamb is really excited about the move. “It’s a great new venue for us – it’s a  bigger space and the acoustics are great for the Blues sound. Every good club needs a good base\, and we are thrilled with our new home.” \n“I’m proud of our history. We are the longest running Blues club in the southern hemisphere. Every Thursday for 22 years we’ve brought Wellington live Blues music. We provide a regular dose of monthly Roots culture on Del Thomas’sradio show on Access radio\, and the Blues stage within the CupaDupa festival is our baby.” \n“The Blues Club plays a vital role in keeping the Blues alive. The NZ School of music does 3 big band nights a year at the Blues Club – The students come through and show their chops. It’ll be a night of groove\, Delta blues (Dave Murphy – ‘New Zealand’s blues man’) and that eclectic west coast kiwi style of Dougal Spier….the big man with the big sound. On drums Roger Watkins and Elliotte Fuimaono on bass. \nDave Murphy plays in the style of Mississippi John Hurt\, Robert Johnson and a whole host of other old blues guys.  Dougal Speir on the other hand is more adept at ripping off lead riffs unheard of since the death of the likes of Roy Buchanan\, Rory Gallagher or Jimi Hendrix! You can imagine what sort of combination they form together on stage. Interesting\, I hear you say\, definitely\, worth a listen\, most definitely\, but don’t forget entertaining as well. \nSo if you want to hear the greatest mix of country blues you can dance to\, enjoy your listening time\, and maybe even have a bit of a jive\, let the Red Dog Saloon Band fill your needs! \n

Their songs comment on life experiences with a distinctive Wellington flavour. \nWellington Headshave evolved their own sound through the influences of Kansas style blue jazz\, the swinging rhythm n blues of Louis Jordan and Ray Charles\, Chicago blues and infused with Pacific/Hawaiian rhythms and Latino feels. \nSharp and energetic\, Wellington Heads entice people to the dance floor\, regularly delighting audiences at Wellington venues\, and playing festivals\, corporate and private functions. They are frequently invited to perform outside of Wellington\, and over recent years have played in Tauranga\, Manawatu\, Nelson and at Wellington Jazz and Blues Festivals. \nWellington Heads have recorded five albums\, their last ‘Southern Night Sky’ released in 2016.
