If you haven’t seen “King” Leo LaDell, you are missing out. He is a fantastic blues player, living in Dunedin.
He has launched a new album which you can find below.
To celebrate the release, the band is playing a Wellington show at Meow on Sunday 23rd of April from 7pm. They will also have some really great support lined up with Louis TM (and his 8-piece soul band) doing a set, as well as South African-born R&B/Neo Soul singer-songwriter Tusekah.

An old friend of Capital Blues, Chris Armour, and fellow bluesman, Melbourne-based, American-born Oscar LaDell, are releasing a new single, Alcohol, on 17th June. This follows their 2021 debut album “Right Kinda Wrong”.
“Alcohol’ is an unblinking, simmering blues testimonial about a love affair with the bottle. The song takes shape in a heady maelstrom of wailing blues harp and crying guitars wherein the passion and pain of the music compliments the song’s tale of a poisonous relationship too sweet to abandon.
The result of a collaboration between guitarist-producer Chris Armour and singer-songwriter Oscar LaDell, ‘Alcohol’ marks the next iteration of their catalogue of modern, yet authentic, blues stylings.
This time around they’ve put their own spin on a song by the Tokanui troubadour Lachie Hayes. This recording features Richard Te One on drums and Steve Moodie on upright bass. The single was engineered by Miklin Halstead, mixed by Chris Armour and mastered by Downbeat Mastering.
To celebrate the release of the new single, and to mark Oscar’s brief return to Aotearoa, the duo has announced gigs in Paekakariki, Palmerston North, and Wellington this month (June). Find tickets here. They have also released of a live acoustic performance of classic blues song “Love Her With A Feeling”, (see video here).
Oscar LaDell will be also playing at Capital Blues on Friday June 24th at 8.30.
Audiences can expect a dynamic show with a mixture of energetic & electrified barn-burner blues, as well as some more soulful, subtle authentic blues stylings performed by some of the best from either side of the Tasman. LaDell and Armour look forward to celebrating the release of their new single by letting loose on a mixture of original material from their 2021 album “Right Kinda Wrong” as well as playing a few choice covers by blues greats like Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Freddie King, B.B King and Little Walter.
Oscar LaDell is a 23-year-old American-born, Melbourne-based blues singer, songwriter,
guitarist, and harmonica player.
Chris Armour is a 31-year-old guitarist and producer from Wellington.
To remind you that we are here – a weekly YouTube playlist of NZ blues gigs. Yes, we know you can do it all by yourselves, no doubt – but it’s fun. Each playlist will be about an hour long. Unless I get carried away…Online (usually) blues gigs with an NZ focus. On Saturday from 5-9.45 Cuba Dupa are giving us in home entertainment with their Go Home Stay Home initiative… link https://www.facebook.com/events/2333135986983937
The very clever Under The Radar has put up a section of Online gigs. They’re not all blues, but they are gigs! https://www.undertheradar.co.nz/utr/gigRegion/Online This week: Took a (Wellington-centric) trip around the North Island found some songs, buskers, jams, Londons at their home, and a guitar lesson for all of you that have enough strings for your guitars! Thanks for all of the emails of encouragement, you’re all stars! This week I looked for NZ blues selections including many of our faves and a couple of furriners from Up North. I get lots of interesting things in me inbox, including Andrew London’s newsletter – a highly recommended read. It prompted me to add his Live at the Londons’ gig onto the playlist – So while you’re watching – perhaps hit the sign up link! (Music starts at about 3 mins with the very funny Appliances) This week we have fab single songs from Jake Stokes, The Tempests; Jams from from Mainstreet in the 80’s (I was probably there…but I’d never remember!) and the Realm in Hataitai (I remember this one); Street work from Auckand and Rotorua; A concert from the London’s and a lesson from Chris Armour! Phew – after that I felt like I’d played a gig meself! Also don’t forget to look for sign up links, tip jars etc – Musicians are a bit “not earny” at the moment – so perhaps put the price of the pint you’re saving into the tip jar! Enjoy please, and please stay well!
