Eat Drink Play – New Orleans Street Music

Saturday, 28 May 2022 @ 1:00 pm

As part of the city-wide Eat Drink Play event, we are having a full afternoon and evening of music for you featuring seven different acts.

1pm – 1.45 Louis Thompson-Munn Solo NOLA

Kick-off your New Orleans day with Louis Thomson-Munn, a keyboard player and vocalist.

He will be setting the vibe for the New Orleans theme with some classic songs from the city and wider Louisiana. Expect some Dr John and traditional New Orleans tunes.

2pm – 2.45 Pip Payne

One man, one slide guitar, one stompbox, and subs…

Pip Payne is energy incarnate. Whether he is crooning with intensity or booming with joy – this one-man show will take you for a wild Cadillac ride! Slide into your afternoon with some street food specials and cheers to your ears!

3pm – 3.45 Red Dog Duo

Red Dog Duo is the best of Wellington’s local blues legends.

If good-time country blues is your thing, then local blues legends, Dave Murphy and Dougal Speir, are your go to! From old-school Delta blues classics to jump-jive and wailing, down-home testifying jive and swing, this is as good as it gets in NZ!

4pm – 5.30 Mel Stevenson

Adding a slice of hip, cool and groovy into the day – Mel Stevenson is a 7-8 piece band of ages younger than your oldest piece of cheese

Already they have racked up major festival appearances and have become the kings and queen of the Cuba St busk – almost before they’ve hit university.

Hailing from Wellington – these dedicated young musicians are energetic, slick … just fabulous musicians

6pm -7.30 Oscar Lavën’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Sax

Oscar Lavën is often listed with attention to his attire first, his dynamism and eclectic playing second.

His absolute mastery of his music and direction of the stage need to war with those as first sentiment. Capital Blues Club has had the honour of this “Rock n Roll” sax version of Oscar on stage regularly over the last year-ish. (Covid years are fluid) The programmes he puts together for the club are varied, appropriate and delivered with marvellous ease. Always gathering great co-pilots, in this band they are Darren Matthiessen,Rob Henderson, Aleister Campbell and Damian Forlong.

8pm-9.30 Crash Bandihoot

Appropriate that Crash Bandihoot’s inaugural show for the Capital Blues Club is on New Orleans Street Vibes day! It is after all “What They Are Known For”! Well, that and being a highly energetic ensemble of skilled performers.

They’ll be bringing this high-energy second-line brass band music to you – in a perfect match for this festival.

10pm-12am Ras Judah & Culture Embassy

Rounding off the day is a welcome return for Ras Judah and his 10-piece multicultural band.

Positively Pan African, but with forays into almost every other cultural influence on the planet! Beat driven, joyous and made of many!

What a way to end the night.

Line-up subject to change.
